Types of Weight Loss Surgeries |
||||||||||||||
| The most important step in the obesity weight loss surgery is to get all of the facts and information you'll need about the various bariatric surgeriey options. Ultimately your bariatric surgeon and other physicians are your best resource for information about the variouse procedures for weight loss. They will most like recommend the procedure they belive will be best for yoy based on many factos. These factors include BMI, your health and weight loss history and the legth of time you have been obese. At the end, you will make the final decision as to wich procedure you feel the most comfortable living with. When you ask a question, make sure you understand the answer. Do not hesitate to ask for a clearer explanation given in simpler language. The decision to have a weight loss surgical procedure may take several visits to their offices and consultation by phone. Ask your doctor for names of other patients who have had similar weight loss surgeries and who are willing to discuss their experiences, good and bad, with you. Although the results of weight loss surgery can be drastic, there are potential risks and complications. Before making your decision, you should be well informed. These steps are necessary if you are to give what is called "informed consent" for the surgical procedure. Informed consent is a legal term meaning that a patient agrees that they have received and understood enough information about a procedure's benefits and risks to allow them to make a decision that is right for them. Your bariatric surgeon will require you to sign a consent form before performing your procedure. Before you sign a consent form, you should have a solid understanding of what is about to take place. You should know what you would need to do to live well after the operation. And you should be aware of the signs or symptoms of complications to look for which may occur after your obesity weight loss surgery. In simple terms, bariatrics concerns the causes, prevention and treatment of severe overweight, a condition known as obesity. Bariatric operations are major gastrointestinal procedures which alter the capacity and/or the anatomy of the digestive system. |

| Some bariatric procedures are performed using general anesthesia via a midline abdominal incision. Some bariatric surgeons also use laparoscopic surgical techniques, involving smaller instruments connected to cameras through which they view the operational site. The two types of obesity weight loss surgery are (1) restrictive - like Lap Band®, and (2) combined restrictive and malabsorptive - such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The first type of surgical procedure simply reduces the size of the stomach, using staples and/or a band, resulting in a drastic reduction in the quantity of food it can ingest. The second reduces stomach capacity and bypasses the upper part of the small intestine, causing a reduction in the number of calories and nutrients which the body absorbs. Stomach bypass operations differ in both how the stomach is sectioned (stapling, banding or gastrectomy), and how much of the duodenum and jejunum are bypassed. Currently, most obesity clinics and bariatric centers favor the Lap Band adjustable gastric banding procedure and the Proximal Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. |
